Shin Splints

"Shin splints" is a term used to describe the pain and inflammation of the tissue around the tibia or shine bone. It occurs as a result of vigorous physical activity. The common cause of shin splints is overuse because of repetitive sports activity, or a sudden increase in the intensity or frequency of physical activity. Runners and dancers are at a higher risk of developing shin splints.

The most common symptoms include pain in the front of the lower leg. Mild swelling may also be present in the lower leg.

The treatment for shin splints includes:

  • Rest

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication help reduce pain and swelling.

  • Ice

  • Compression: Wrap the leg with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling.

  • Stretching exercises.
